R-1

First year orthopedic residents are under the control of the program director. The rotations follow the requirements outlined by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS).

First year residents complete six months of orthopedics. Rotations include:

  • Orthopedic Trauma (3 months)
    • Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative poly-trauma orthopedic care
    • An additional month of orthopedic trauma will be spent as a night float seeing consults and covering on-call surgery cases under the supervision of more experienced residents
  • Hand Surgery (1 month)
    • Surgical management of hand pathology including trauma and elective cases
  • Spine Surgery (1 month)
    • Surgical management of acute and chronic cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine pathology

General surgery rotations include: trauma, surgical intensive care, plastic surgery/burns and vascular. A single rotation will be dedicated to research. 

R-2

Second year residents complete rotations in 3 month blocks. Second year residents gain surgical experience and exposure in a variety of specialties including Hand, Sports Medicine, and Adult Reconstruction. Rotations include:

Hand Surgery

  • Residents: R1, R2, R4
  • Surgical experience includes:
    • Hand surgery trauma
    • Elective hand surgery in outpatient surgery center
    • Microsurgery
  • Clinic experience
    • Hand surgery

Dayton VA Medical Center

  • Residents: R1, R2, R4
  • Surgical experience includes:
    • Adult reconstruction surgery
    • Hand surgery
  • Clinic experience
    • Adult reconstruction surgery
    • Hand surgery
    • Foot and Ankle surgery
  • Call
    • VA call pool (home call)

Miami Valley South Hospital

  • Residents: R2, R4/5
  • Surgical experience includes:
    • Focus: Adult reconstruction surgery
    • Orthopedic trauma surgery
    • Orthopedic sports medicine
  • Call
    • Miami Valley junior call pool (in-house call)
    • Miami Valley South call pool (weekend cases)

Atrium Medical Center

    R-3

    Third year residents complete rotations in 3 month blocks. Third year of residency comes with an increase in surgical experience and also involves the first of two pediatric rotations. Third year residents gain experience running a service on the Spine and Foot and Ankle rotations as they transition to become senior residents. Rotations include:

    Foot and Ankle

    • Residents: R3
    • Mentorship model for R3
    • Surgical experience includes:
      • Foot and ankle surgery
    • Clinic experience
      • Foot and Ankle surgery
      • Referral management for amputations, orthotics, prosthetics, etc.

    Orthopedic Trauma

    • Residents: R1, R3, R5
      • 1 orthopedic trauma fellow (R6)
    • Surgical experience includes:
      • Busiest Level I Trauma Center Emergency Department in Ohio
      • Acute trauma management
      • Post-traumatic reconstruction
    • Clinic experience
      • Orthopedic trauma surgery
    • Call

    Spine surgery

    R-4

    Fourth year residents complete rotations in 3 month blocks. Fourth and fifth year residents do not take in-house call. The resident often follows the Attending one-on-one in the private office and in operating room functioning as a chief resident with progressively-increasing responsibilities to prepare for the fifth year of training. Rotations include:

    Hand Surgery

    • Residents: R1, R2, R4
    • All hand surgeons are fellowship-trained and have a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in hand surgery.
    • Surgical experience includes:
      • Hand surgery trauma
      • Elective hand surgery in outpatient surgery center
      • Microsurgery
      • Orthopedic oncology surgery once per month

      R-5/Chief Resident

      Fifth year residents complete rotations in 3 month blocks. The chief resident supervises the junior residents and advanced practice practitioners on respective services. Chiefs are also responsible for presenting the Ortho Trauma Review each month at the Grand Rounds on Wednesday. Rotations include:
