Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery Course (SUR 825)

Required for Medical Students

Course Director: R. Michael Johnson, M.D., M.P.H., FACS

Course Description: The student will act as an extern, involved in the preoperative evaluation, intraoperative care and postoperative follow-up of patients on the plastic surgery panel. The student may be asked to participate in emergency evaluation and care of patients. Attendance at weekly burn conference and clinic is suggested.

Time and Location: August-May for two to four weeks at Miami Valley Hospital, Kettering Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital (Dayton) and Ohio Valley Medical Group (Springfield). Lead time to Drop/Add elective is one month.

Prerequisites: Completion of Year III.

Content Categories: After this plastic surgery rotation, the student should be able to evaluate and manage patients requiring breast reconstruction, hand surgery, and microsurgery, in addition to general plastic surgery. The student will also be expected to suture wounds properly and understand the nature of complicated wound care. The student will be able to evaluate and manage both acute burn injuries as well as burn patients requiring late reconstruction.

Learning Methods: The student will learn from direct supervised patient care and discussion of relevant cases with the attending physicians. Research participation is encouraged. Participation in plastic surgery educational conference is suggested

Evaluation: Evaluation is based on the student's initiative, overall clinical performance and demonstrated knowledge. Grade: Pass/Fail.
