Providership Guidelines

On this page:

Introduction

Note: As of February 25, 2014 the term sponsorship has been changed to providership per the ACCME Simplification Plan.

All CME educational activities developed and presented by a provider accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and associated with AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ must be developed and presented in compliance with all ACCME accreditation requirements-in addition to all the requirements of the AMA PRA program.

Types of Providerships

Directly Provided Activity

A directly provided activity is an activity planned and implemented by Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Jointly Provided Activity

A jointly provided activity is an activity planned and implemented by Boonshoft School of Medicine working in partnership with an entity that is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Guidelines for Jointly Provided CME Activities

  • The Boonshoft School of Medicine requires written documentation that demonstrates how each such jointly sponsored CME activity was planned and implemented in compliance with policies and procedures. Material submitted can be from files of either the accredited provider or the non-accredited provider.
  • Ideal joint sponsor candidates are healthcare related organizations that support the school's mission.
  • If two or more accredited providers are involved in an activity, then Boonshoft School of Medicine must assume responsibility for the activity.
  • Joint Sponsored events must state "The ideas and opinions expressed during this educational event do not necessarily reflect those of Wright State University or the Boonshoft School of Medicine" on marketing and/or activity materials.

AMA Credit Designation and Accreditation Statements

The learning format listed in the Credit Designation Statement must be one of the following AMA approved learning formats:

  1. Live activity
  2. Enduring material
  3. Journal-based CME activity
  4. Test-item writing activity
  5. Manuscript review activity
  6. PI CME activity
  7. Internet point-of-care activity

Use of the phrase "AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™"

The phrase "AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™" is a trademark of the American Medical Association. Accredited CME providers must always use the complete italicized, trademarked phrase. The phrase "Category 1 Credit" must never be used when referring to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Include one of the following Accreditation Statements on all CME brochures:

  • Directly sponsored activities should use the following:
"Wright State University (WSU) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. WSU designated this [learning format] for a maximum of [number of hours] AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity."
  • Jointly provided activities should use the following:
"This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Wright State University (WSU) and [Non-accredited provider]. WSU designated this [learning format] for a maximum of [number of hours] AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity."
