Chinese HIV Risk Reduction Project

Funded by a grant from the World AIDS Foundation, this project involved the transfer of behavioral risk assessment technology to Chinese HIV/STD researchers. It was designed to help them assess sex practices among Chinese people at high risk for HIV/STD infection. The project brought together a multidisciplinary team of WSU researchers and a team of epidemiologists in China with sexually transmitted disease research experience. The China research team was associated with the Shandong Medical University (SMU) in Jinan, Shandong Province.

The project's goal was to increase the knowledge of risk behavior assessment among the Chinese researchers as well as produce an empirically derived sex risk behavior assessment questionnaire (SRBA) for use in China. Using the SRBA, this project assessed the sex risk behaviors among 500 STD clinic patients in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province in northeast China. The collection and analysis of relevant data on sex behaviors was the first step toward the development of intervention strategies among people at risk of HIV/STD infection in China. This project ended in November 1999.
