Didactics

Medical, Pediatric, and Cosmetic Dermatology Didactics

DRP didactics are primarily resident-led, high-yield boards-focused sessions that take place on Friday mornings or afternoons. These occur during protected time from direct patient care duties to allow optimal focus on learning during these sessions.

Each academic year, the primary assigned reading alternates between Dermatology by Jean Bolognia and Andrews’ Diseases of the Skin as the main resource for clinical dermatology information. Residents also utilize Comprehensive Dermatologic Drug Therapy by Wolverton, Genodermatoses by Spitz, and Review of Dermatology by Alikhan to supplement learning in medical dermatology.

All didactic sessions are comprised of a mixture of PowerPoint lectures, review questions from high-yield dermatology question banks, and Kodachrome sessions. During these sessions, residents greatly benefit from the expertise of upper-level residents and faculty that provide clinical correlation to accompany academic learning.

In addition to resident-led didactics, the DRP frequently hosts lectures by clinical faculty and outstanding visiting speakers pertaining to their particular expertise within dermatology that serves to expand the horizons of our clinical education.

Dermatopathology Didactics

In addition to our dermatopathology in-person rotations, residents cover material from Dermatopathology by Dirk Elston at a guided pace throughout the year, with weekly dermatopathology didactic sessions at a multiheaded scope guided by experienced dermatopathology faculty. These sessions provide residents of all levels an opportunity to work through unknowns and teaching slides.

Surgery Didactics

In addition to hands-on surgical experience, residents participate in a quarterly surgical journal club led by Mohs surgery faculty and practice flaps, grafts, and other complex closures during the yearly cadaver lab session.

Conferences

Residents attend a variety of conferences throughout their training. While not a comprehensive list, some of the core conferences that our residents attend include Ohio Dermatological Association (ODA) Annual Meeting, American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting, ODAC Dermatology, Aesthetic & Surgical conference, and ASDS conferences. The DRP encourages residents to seek out other conferences that may be great opportunities for learning as well.

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds are held monthly. Patient viewing starts at 1 p.m., and patient discussion begins at 1:30 p.m. We encourage community dermatologists to attend. Specific dates and times can be obtained by contacting Toni Ennis at toni.ennis@wright.edu.

Journal Club

Journal Club is held twice monthly. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Archives of Dermatology are discussed. We welcome participation from members of the community. Specific dates and times can be obtained by contacting Toni Ennis at toni.ennis@wright.edu.
